Tanzania: JPM Embarks On Road Project Launch Marathon
PRESIDENT John Magufuli is scheduled to officially launch
construction of nine road projects in Kagera, Kigoma and Singida regions as
well as Tabora airport between tomorrow and next Tuesday.
In Kagera, Dr Magufuli is expected to launch the
154-kilometre Kigoma-Biharamulo-Lusahunga road project that will cost about
160bn/-. The launching ceremony is planned at Biharamulo Township tomorrow.
According to a pro gramme released by Kagera Regional Commissioner's
office here yesterday, President Magufuli will spend two days in the region,
with his activities including a public rally in Ngara District on Thursday.
Retired President Jakaya Kikwete laid the foundation
stone for the road project in August 2013. Tanzania National Roads Agency
(TANROADS) Chief Executive Officer Engineer Patrick Mfugale said the project
was delayed due to failure by the initial contractor to timely execute the
venture as per contract, leading to his dismissal.
A separate statement by the Permanent Secretary in the
Ministry of Works, Transport and Communications, Engineer Joseph Nyamhanga,
indicated that President Magufuli will on July 21 lay the foundation stone for
construction of 50-kilometre Nyakanazi-Kibondo road in Kigoma region.
The Head of State is on the same day scheduled to launch
construction works on the 63-kilometre KidahweKasulu road, which will be
upgraded to bitumen. The ceremony will be held at Kasulu Township.
The PS further said in the statement that Dr Magufuli
will on this Sunday be in Kaliua to kick off the 56-kilometre Kaliua-Kazilambwa
road as well as the 94-kilometre Urambo-Ndono-Tabora road in the region.
Opening of the 114.9-kilometre Tabora-Page-Nzega motorway
will feature on the president's programme on July 24 and on the same day he
will be on another road project connecting Tabora and Nyahua, covering 85
kilometres.
And, on that very day, Dr Magufuli will be in Tabora to
officially launch the newly constructed road in the municipality before launching
the 89.3-kilometre Manyoni-ItigiChanya road on July 25.
"Unveiling and initiating projects in the central
and western corridors correspond with the government's strategy to connect all
regional headquarters with tarmac roads," Engineer Nyamhanga said in the
statement.

Preparations for Dodoma capital city master plan take off
Dodoma — The government, in collaboration with experts,
has started a preliminary stage of drafting a modern master plan for the
development of Capital City of Dodoma.
More than 2,000 public leaders and civil servants have so
far relocated to Dodoma between August last year and February this year.
More than 2,000 other civil servants will shift to Dodoma
by the end of this month, a move, which will see a significant population
increase in the designated capital city.
Currently, Dodoma has a shortage of residences and
structures for office apartments and some key infrastructure to provide for a
rapid increase in the number of people and of vehicles.
To address the challenge, for the past four days, nine
experts from Kenya's UN-Habitant met with their local counterparts from
Dodoma's Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP), Ardhi University, the
President's Office (Regional Administration and Local Government) to deliberate
on how the capital city can be constructed more professionally.
At the meeting, which attracted also district executive
directors from all seven Dodoma districts, participants developed an action
plan to be used as a yardstick by the government during drafting of the master
plan for the designated capital city. Held under the theme of 'Sustainable
Dodoma Vision 2025-Dodoma City we want' participants stressed a need for
effective consideration of integrated urban planning, when drafting the master
plan.
They debated also on the best way to design a modern
housing strategy, street designs, urban development control strategies,
rural-urban linkages in Dodoma and the establishment of a metropolitan hub in
Dodoma.
In his remarks during the closure of a four-day meeting
held at the weekend, deputy Minister in the President's Office (Regional
Administration and Local Government) Selemani Jafo said the government was very
determined to transform Dodoma into the best African city. "The
government's focus is to get a state-of-the-art master plan for the development
of a modern capital city of Dodoma so that other countries may come and take a leaf
from us."
We don't want to repeat the mistakes we made, when
developing Dar es Salaam City. We want Dodoma to have a real face and status of
the capital city," he pointed out.
More than 12,000 hectares have been set aside for the
development of the government city between Bahi and Bwigiri wards. The area is
expected to include office blocks, residential areas for civil servants,
commercial service areas, playing grounds, an air strip and other necessary
social services.

Tanzania: NHC Gets Sh4.5tr Loan for Dar Project
Dar es Salaam — In what can be described as a major
boost, the National Housing Corporation (NHC) has secured a $2 billion (Sh4.5
trillion) loan from PTA Bank -- the financial arm of Comesa -- to construct a
commercial centre and satellite city at Kawe in Dar es Salaam.
This was revealed by the director general of NHC, Mr
Nahemia Mchechu, yesterday.
Addressing councillors from Kinondoni Municipality who
toured the project site that comprises the premises of defunct Tanganyika
Packers, Mr Mchechu said with funds secured, the project is scheduled to be
completed by 2020.
Owned by Comesa, the PTA Bank is open to non-Comesa
states like Tanzania. "The process of building the centre is geared up as
we are going on smoothly with construction.
When the project is completed it is going to be the
busiest centre in this city, hosting at least 50,000 people for 20 hours
non-stop," he said.
According to him, at the moment, the busiest commercial
centre of Kariakoo with nine hours working time does not host such a huge
gathering of business operators.
"Our aspiration of shifting magnet of greatest
business activities from Kariakoo to Kawe is getting closer," said the NHC
boss.
He also said they have already prepared the masterplan
for the envisaged satellite town of Kawe which will attract huge investments in
air transport through construction of helipads, rapid bus transport lanes and
yachting marinas.
"Dar es Salaam City, which generates 60 per cent of
the national income is set to remain in upper hand for revenue generation after
the satellite city becomes operational," he said.
The chairman of the urban planning committee for
Kinondoni Municipal Council, Mr Songora Mnyonge, said the project would help a
great deal in decongesting Kariakoo, because it is set to host the biggest
shopping mall, residences, shopping centres as well as recreation and sports
centres.
"We are happy to hear that Kinondoni is poised to be
the biggest generator of revenue through this project. We will continue to
attract many investors for this purpose," said Mr Mnyonge adding, "I
advise Kinondoni residents to get prepared for this big project, especially
embarking on innovative business venture as the municipality is set to become
the biggest business hub of Dar es Salaam," he said.
The councilors and members of the press also visited the
Morocco Square, another NHC real estate project which is under construction.
NHC project manager Samwel Metili said the Morocco
Square, which will host a modern hotel, tourist accommodations, shopping and
recreation facilities, is worth of Sh157.5 billion.
In March last year, a report released at the 11th
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) - Export Import Bank of India (Exim
Bank) Conclave on India-Africa Project Partnership showed that at least Sh22
trillion was sought for 22 other projects.
The money was sought from Exim Bank of India, the
Government of India's other own sources as well as from investors in the Asian
nation through their CII. This is done in the hope that certain projects can be
implemented.
